Memento || Not much below the surface? || Film Analysis

Listen to this man's analysis.  Do you agree?  If so, explain why.  If not, give your own analysis of "what's beneath the surface" of Memento.

  1. I do agree with this reviewer's perspective, He didn't read the short story but he is going into this as a movie goer. Now the film objective is to make the viewer think. also to see how the protagonist can turn into the antagonist due to having people use him for revenge and people changing roles. This film makes the viewer look at many different points of view and its up to the viewer to determine whether or not Leonard is seen as a good person or a bad person.

    1. Yeah, and so what do you decide? It appears to me you give the film a little more credit than this critic does! Perhaps you're starting to like it?

  2. Yes I do agree with his analysis. He talks about how the main character basically gets used throughout the film because of his condition (amnesia). I agree with this because I too do think that he is being used by Natalie teddy and the guy that works at the motel. It is not good to do that but they figured since they want revenge on someone else he was the best person to help them with since he wouldn't really remember it anyway.

    1. Yep. Do you agree there's not much more to the film beyond that?

  3. I agree that once you understand what happened in the film, that there is not much left to analyze, but I don't think that is the point. As a psychological thriller, the movie does a good job at forcing the viewer to understand what is going on as much as Leonard. Everyone does use him in someway, and perhaps even he takes advantage of his own condition to continually solve his wife's death over and over again.

    1. Good point, given what you and your colleagues say, I think the film creates something like an ouroboros (something that eats its own tail) -- that's actually a bit more complex than what this guy suggests, perhaps

  4. Revenge is definitely a huge part of this film. Once realizing what is going on in the movie and that he constantly forgets, you soon realize he is being taken advantage of by the people around him for his disability of memory. The interesting but good part about this film is that we are learning with him throughout the film. Overall, I agree with this viewers general analysis.
