The flash of Susan's post image, the lightning storm, the off neon lights all denote the lost of this "singer" after her husband's death. The change of space shooting from the outside stormy and threatening weather and the peace and quiet inside the drama house creates the strong contrast that even though Susan is apparent pretty and fairy in the public (just like the lady on the post). however, her life is encountering a down hill. When the conversation starts, Susan was placed in the coner of the screen and she always avoids to look or looks up to others, which is the indication of the place that demonstrates her hopelessness and her desperation.
Nice observations, Alice. What's fascinating, too, is the aerial, bird's eye perspective that then swoops down into the scene, catching Susan off center, as you say, and also in such shadows.
