CITIZEN KANE Z-axis scene example

  1. This scene is supposed to bring us back to the earlier scene when Chaes was innocently playing in the background, as his parents negotiated money in the foreground. Now in this scene as Charles is running out of business, he walks from the close shot to the long shot while the two other business men stay in the foreground. When Charles returns to the close shot, which represents the man he ended up being, he says "if I hadn't been very rich, I might have been a really great man".

  2. Some people make compare Kane to be an earlier Donald Trump, but I would disagree. He is a model/representation of all power for businessmen. Acknowledging their power and control, imposing it on others, not feeling much remorse. They reflect on life when things are going downhill, like in this scene, and think there could be a chance that without the wealth in power they would be a better person. The scene angles put emphasis on this, because you see the men up under him working and thinking of way to help, while he is the background doing whatever, just to come back , and bring his wealth; almost like a slap in the face.
